As a child, she remembers being interested in classical and folk music which helped her hone her skills. She stumbled into film music because she had to earn a living. Lata even acted to earn a living. In the 1945 film Badi Maa, Lata and Asha Bhosle, her sister, acted with Noorjehan. Lata sang for herself and her sister. The end of the 1940s saw her take up her true vocation - singing. She first sang for the Marathi movie Kiti Hasaal in 1942 and in Hindi for Aap Ki Seva Mein in 1947. However, she hit big time with Majboor in 1948 - her first duet ‘Ab darne ki kya baat’ with Mukesh. Her really big break came with the ‘Ayega anewla’ number in Mahal in 1949. Still, the singer’s name in the credits was Kamini, the name of the role played by heroine Madhubala in the film.
